Worry is a thin stream of fear trickling through the mind. If encouraged, it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.

Perhaps one of the greatest quotes ever written. Absolute truth. For far too many of us, worrisome thought patterns, or channels, have become so ingrained in our mind that virtually all other thoughts naturally flow in their direction. Sadly, if we choose to live an unconscious life, we never stop to analyze what is happening; we just accept it.

But we do control our thoughts, and we control them completely. The external environment can throw anything at us, but only we choose how to process what has happened, and we choose how to respond. We can let the channels built on fear automatically determine our feelings and reactions, or we can consciously take charge and select our emotional state and physical response.

Better yet, let’s begin filling in those channels of angst and start digging deeper trenches in our mind based on states of serenity, joy, trust, and admiration. Not only will this make us feel immensely better, it will help us regain our sense of purpose in life.
