Milton on Gratitude

Gratitude bestows reverence, allowing us to encounter everyday epiphanies, those transcendent moments of awe that change forever how we experience life and the world.

The older I get, the more I am convinced that gratitude is not only one of the most important spiritual attributes, it is also one of the most critical components to personal happiness. When we are focusing our mind on gratitude, giving thanks for all that we have, it is impossible to simultaneously be complaining or bemoaning our position. Correspondingly, when we are complaining about our lot in life, we are shunning gratefulness.

When we decide to actively embrace gratitude as part of our psyche, something truly amazing happens. The world suddenly doesn’t appear so mean and cold, and we begin to see all of the good that surrounds us; items which were formerly shrouded now come into focus.

Amazingly, when we decide to embark down the path of gratitude, we also find that success begins to surround us. Accomplishments which were once elusive begin coming to fruition. Achievements we hadn’t even previously considered start to manifest.

In short, gratitude opens a portal through which we can see our Spiritual destiny. Talk about an everyday epiphany!

We can be thankful to a friend for a few acres, or a little money; and yet for the freedom and command of the whole earth, and for the great benefits of our being, our life, health, and reason, we look upon ourselves as under no obligation.
